"The Lafayettes" est un groupe de sept musiciens originaire de Baltimore, Maryland, USA qui s'est constitué au début des années 60. Cachés derrière une apparence trompeuse d'étudiants rangés, ce groupe de musiciens joue et compose dans un style rock fortement influencé par le rhythm & blues noir et les groupes de doo-wop.
Les Lafayettes n'ont enregistré en tout que deux 45 tours simples pour RCA aux USA en 1962 qui donneront naissance au fameux EP français à la pochette rouge dont le titre phare "Nobody But You" passait énormément dans les jukes box en France dans les années 1962-63. "Nobody but you" signé Lee Bonner et Frank Bonarigio figure donc sur leur premier single américain avec l'excellent mid tempo "Life's too short" qui fera un petit tour au fond du top 100 du Bilboard (N°87 juillet 1962). Ce titre inspirera Dick Rivers qui l'enregistre fin octobre 1962 sous le titre "Bien trop court" (paroles signées Georges Aber)
Sur la face B du EP français on trouve donc les deux morceaux du second simple américain. "Caravan of lonely men" est le titre le moins rock du disque. Cette composition du talentueux Jeff Barry est néanmoins bonne. Enregistré au départ par un certain Tony Richard ex leader du groupe de doo woper les Fascinators et par Jeff Barry lui même avec les Lovers un autre groupe vocal. Elle figure aussi au menu de Johnny Hallyday qui la grava lors de son séjour à Nashville en 1962 (face B de son single US Philips 400434). Le dernier titre des Lafayettes "I still doo" est un pur joyau de doo wop. Pour l'anecdote le regretté Nino Ferrer grand amateur de rhythm & blues chantait "Nobody but you" sur scène en 1963 lorsqu'il accompagnait la chanteuse Nancy Holloway pendant que cette dernière se changeait. A signaler aussi la version sauvage d'un combo alsacien les fameux Lionets qui avaient enregistré "Nobody but you" le 16 octobre 1966 dans l'église des Dominicains de Guebwiller pour le label DMF. as similar to the music from that A Certain Frank Nobody No Nobody No is known for the song.
