Throughout its history, Uganda has been plagued by oppressive dictators, the most notorious being Idi Amin in the 1970s. In this case, and several others, Uganda broke free from its oppression through violent revolutions, only to welcome in another tyrannical regime. After spending a month in the countrys capital recently, I felt that, even in Ugandas longest peacetime for decades, history could easily repeat itself in a similar way. In describing this process, both meanings of the word revolution seem appropriate (an uprising against the government, as well as circular motion), and are explored in this piece

In Africa, the drum symbolises power, and in this piece, the percussion holds similar control. Whilst the bongo drums are a Cuban instrument, they have their roots in Africa, as does the modern marimba. In the first section, variations on a twenty-four quaver cycle are dictated by the bongos, and copied by the rest of the ensemble. The ensemble is divided into high and low registers, as well as into its respective instrumental families, and explores a harmonic field constructed outwards from the marimbas opening F. Gradually the ensemble starts to break free from these ties as it starts to interrupt the metrical cycle, and the intervallic content of the harmonic field is altered. The fragmentation of the bongos line by the wood blocks, and their decreasing dynamic, undermines the percussions authority further.

The music then dissolves to explore the core of the chord based around F that characterised the previous section; the marimba still exerting control over the ensemble as they follow the marimbas changes of harmony with string glissandi and delicate clarinet lines. However, out of a tutti trill, the oboe introduces a melodic line comprising minor sevenths and thirds different from the previous materials intervallic structure and begins a lyrical woodwind section. The strings initially continue to mirror the marimbas harmonic changes (based around the dominant C), but eventually continue the woodwinds material, and for a brief moment the ensemble is free from its percussive dictators.

This freedom is short-lived as material from the first section is recalled by the marimba, and the intervallic construction of the harmony works back to its starting point. The reintroduction of the bongos and woodblocks completes the cycle, and the piece ends as it began.

The choice of ensemble was influenced by the idea of pairing instruments together, as well as having a rough match of dynamic range and tessitura between the winds and strings. The instruments ability to play the highly articulated passages as well as the ethereal, lyrical passages was also an important factor. as similar to the music from that Radioactive Freedom of Choise Harmony in Dynamic is known for the song.
