This is a song I wrote at 3-3:30 AM on 26 December. The chorus melody was something I'd had sitting around for months. I've seen a lot of anti-suicide and anti-bullying original songs coming out recently. I wanted to make my own contribution to the 'new genre.' But I also wanted to say something else in the song: while (and after) we insist to suffering kids that it gets better, we have to remember that it's up to us to fulfill that promise. We, the ones who have made it through to the other side, have to MAKE it better for them as our heroes did for us.
The lyrics of this song, for me, are meant to convey that message. They're meant to go on a journey FROM the tragically fatalistic perspective of the kids who took their own lives TO an optimistic call to arms. The love is here, but we have to work at every opportunity to keep it alive and spread it, not just for five minutes of our lives. Amazingly to me, I wrote the last verse live and on the spot while I recorded. I think it came from my need to say 'make it better' and my fear of how short life can be; Fast like a bullet train. We need to slow things down.
The story comes partly from that of Paul Broussard, a real person who was a fatal victim of hate on 4 July 1991. He was killed by a group of young men who were on a deliberate mission to attack gay men, and their trap was to ask for directions to a club in Montrose called 'Heaven'. Paul's story broke my heart and as with almost all my songs, I wrote this in an attempt to put it back together. May he rest in peace. as similar to the music from that W O M P The Other Side Way to Heaven is known for the song.
