The voice of Dani Siciliano will be familiar to many of you, as her distinctive jazz coloured tones have been heard on the remarkable albums of Matthew Herbert. Many of his most memorable songs, and live shows, have been enhanced in no small part by Dani's vocal performances. Dani's influences are clearly wide ranging. Her musical childhood, took in, the church, country, jazz, soul, and punk. Dani moved to San Francisco in the early 90's, and in the following years, became a familiar face on the city's vibrant electronic music and club scene, having DJ residencies at the legendary End Up club amongst others. This musically diverse and culturally open-minded city is where she first met Matthew Herbert, before moving to London, and becoming such a central part of the Herbert sound.
'Walk The Line' is quite difficult to describe. There are certainly not many songs around that it can be compared to. Dani says of 'Walk The Line', "It's like a camp stampede of elephants escaping from the circus."
Rather than opt for the familiar, modern route of getting other artists to remix a song, Dani has asked for 'Walk The Line' to be reinterpreted by the chosen artists in their own way, by recording cover versions.
The 'Ukulady Mix' by Mara Carlyle is a wonderful "quirk n' soul", almost unplugged, take on the song. Mara is a wonderful singer and songwriter. She has been melting hearts with her beautiful voice since her first collaborations with techno innovators Plaid in 1998. Mara's gorgeous voice blends with her bargain-bucket ukulele and Geoff the bass man, with Plaid also throwing some skills into the mix.
Continuing on the cover version theme, Dani has included on this release, her morphed and moody version of Nirvana's 'Come As You Are'. The demo version found favour with Gilles Peterson and the like. Dani has reworked the track and makes this instantly familiar song all her own.
The EP is rounded off with an abridged addition of another cover version of 'Walk The Line', this time by Beans, the former mastermind of Warp´s abstract art-hoppers Anti Pop Consortium. The "to be continued mix" gives a taste of the full version, which will be featured on the next single.
Expect some exciting and original music to emerge as Dani's album unfolds.
